Double Dragon IV is the next chapter in the classic Double Dragon series of beat ’em up arcade games. Double Dragon IV keeps the same classic side scrolling game play and the same retro style graphics. The graphics are updated from the original 8-bit graphics found in the original Double Dragon released back in 1987 but does keep the same general look and feel.
The story for Double Dragon IV picks up after the events of Double Dragon II and the defeat of the Black Warriors. In addition to the story based mode there is also a two player duel mode.
The game play involves players taking control of the Lee brothers, Billy and Jimmy, both of whom are martial arts experts. They fight numerous enemies and rival fighters on levels that become progressively more difficult and ending in boss fights. The most notorious enemies that the brothers face are members of the Black Warriors gang who have risen to power in New York City after nuclear war has left much of the world without law and order.
Double Dragon IV has been developed and published by Arc System Works who acquired the rights to the series back in 2015 from the original Double Dragon developer, Technos Japan. Arc System Works is a development company based in Japan which specializes in fighting games. In addition to the Double Dragon series, they also acquired other properties such as Karate Champ. With Double Dragon IV they have brought back many of the key team members involved in the original 1987 Double Dragon arcade version. This includes original game producer Yoshihisa Kishimoto, Designer, Koji Ogata, and Composer, Kazunaka Yamane.
Double Dragon IV is available via digtial download for Windows PCs through Steam and PlayStation 4 through PlayStation Network. The release date is January 29, 2016 (PS4) and January 30 (PC) for Japan and then January 30/31 in North America for the PS4 and PC respectively.
